General and Wesleyan section: All welcome

General (including Wesleyan and Methodist) section

Later addition

The general section of the cemetery was allocated to the Wesleyans on 11 May 1872. This was to accommodate burials for anyone who could not be accepted into the existing (denominationally-based) sections of the cemetery.

Space for all

Wesleyan (Methodist) Churches grew out of a revival in 18th Century England, based on the doctrine (concept) that “God through Christ can forgive the sin which destroys us…” *NZWesleyan Church website

Wesleyan (Methodist) Churches would accept for burial people belonging to non-conformist religious denominations, or social outcasts such as prisoners, atheists, or those who died by suicide.
