Māori burials at Symonds Street Cemetery

The cemetery used by Māori after 1840

There are no known pre-Pakehā Māori burials in the immediate area of the Symonds Street Cemetery, though across Symonds Street was a tree where Rauru of Ngāti Whatua was killed after an incursion into Tāmaki Makaurau, occupied at that time by Te Waiohua. This was the start of hostilities between the two tribes.

There are at least 69 Māori burials in the cemetery from the post-1840 period.
